In response to Sheena's and Serena's blog!! (and also, I have finally found the strength and discipline to write!! )
For those of you who may not know, I'm studying at the University of Melbourne (apparently one of the better schools in Australia) Currently doing a Bachelor of Arts (hopefully majoring in philosophy and politics)
My common responses when going out for dinners or in church...
Auntee 1: So what are you studying Scott
Me: Arts at Melbourne Uni
Auntee 1: Wa, very good school that one...
Me: Smile sheepishly
#The conversation will have a 50/50 probability of going two ways#
First Probability
Auntee 1: Arts? So you studying painting/design is it?
Me: NO (sigh...) (I can't draw for NUTS!! In all literal sense of that cliched expression)
Auntee 1: So what are you doing then?
Me: Politics, History and Philosophy
Auntee 1 (if Christian): Aiyoh, must be careful, philosophy can make you back slide you know!! They all don't believe in God!!
(Contrary to popular opinion, many philosophers are a lot more compassionate regarding matters of social justice and poverty than the average Christian!!)
Me (having to be polite): Yes I know Auntee, (sheepish smile)
Auntee 1: Politics... So you want to be politician is it?
Me: Exasperated look (No!!!! Why do you think that studying politics would lead you to a career in politics?) Arggh....
Probability 2
Auntee 1: Politics? Cannot get job onelar... what are you going to do? Teach in college r?
Me (in my head): First of all, what is the flipping problem about teaching in college? Secondly, I'm doing what I love.....
Auntee 1: Must switch to law/arts ya!!
Me: Sigh.....
Conclusion
Agreeing with Sheena, the average Malaysian Auntee or Joe dose not understand the conception of a liberal education, to the (especially Chinese) Malaysian family, the only respectable careers are those found in medicine or law... Everyone who does anything else are automatically labeled second class!!
Even though I have the privilege of studying in one of Australia's more recognized university, mentalities can never be changed overnight!! At the end of the day it only goes to show that the Malaysian public is still at its infancy in regards to matters of higher education.
Society is formed by coupling people of different backgrounds with different skills and talents.... It is a great misfortune that we value doctors more than the road sweeper, blame the liberal philosophers Lock and Smith for creating a capitalist society (the society that we currently live in)
As Martin Luther once said:
I dream that one day my children will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character!!
Revised
I dream that one day my children will not be judged by their university degrees or highly prized possessions but by the content of their character!!
I think my bible says that God judges that way too....
Responses to my ramblings very encouraged!!
Serena and Sheena, very good stuff!! Continue vindicating the non conformists!!!
